The Death of the Hired Man

Silas, the hired man, returns like a prodigal son to the place he regards as home even though it is not his family. Not every person is a hired man who strays from his work on a farm and then returns unexpectedly, but every person has the same universal human needs that Silas communicates when he returns home to die—the only place where he matters, where he is remembered, and where he is cherished, not for his accomplishments, talents, or virtue but for who he is—a person who needs the love of a family and the virtues of the heart that only homes instill.

However, Silas has earned the reputation of an unreliable farm hand that leaves when most needed in the busiest season. However, this time it is a different occasion. Silas goes home to die because no person wants to end his life alone, rejected, or forgotten.

Just as Mary provided food, shelter, and comfort when she welcomed him in his destitute condition, Warren always dealt with Silas by straightforward, manly directness. Silas receives both love and discipline, mercy and justice, unconditional and conditional love. All of his human needs are met as he is welcomed, appreciated, and forgiven, and he receives affirmation and compliments for the good work he produces.

As much a baby needs a loving home at the moment of birth, a dying person needs the same tenderness, care, and special attention in his last moments. Tagged as: poetry , Robert Frost. Mitchell A. Robert Frost’s “The Death of the Hired Man”

Robert Frost This debate between Mary and Warren represents the ambivalence often felt between two conflicting desires, here the desire to be charitable toward others and the desire not to be taken advantage of. For whatever reason, Silas is unable to ask his own family for assistance.

Mary sat musing on the lamp-flame at the table Waiting for Warren. When she heard his step, She ran on tip-toe down the darkened passage To meet him in the doorway with the news And put him on his guard. Who else will harbour him At his age for the little he can do? Off he goes always when I need him most. In winter he comes back to us.

Joe Fasbinder, have long been a student of family and ritual magic, as it existed in the early years of the colonization of America. Joe was a writer, reporter, editor and finally a columnist on computer issues at United Press International for 25 years, followed by additional experience at the keyboards of the Los Angeles Times Syndicate, the Los Angeles Daily Journal and in more than a dozen other freelance and part-time positions. Joe Fasbinder. Seerstone is a thoroughly researched, tension-wrought tale of greed, and how it dazzles and threatens, sometimes using the most arcane and unearthly means, to conquer a man and his family, and to wring seemingly impossible changes, potentially enormous changes in the life of Dayer Preston, who, with his wife, has always striven to work toward the light, as they understand it. The story takes place at the dawn of the Nineteenth Century, in Williker Township, a cold and dying place, in western New York State, at a time when it seemed that there was no magic strong enough to make things right, to bring forth abundance from an earth that withheld its bounty, despite man's best efforts. Despite the magic that stirred the spirits of heaven and earth. It is a strange and unearthly time.

He also paints a rather bleak picture of broken, deteriorating relationships and conflicts, especially between husband and wife but also shares his opinion that man is alone in the universe and will always be, despite his efforts to seek companionship. He is used to abrupt deaths like this - knowing as a farmer about the natural order of the things and the cruel inescapable shadow of death this idea is reinforced by the fact that Frost himself suffered from similar tragedies with some of his children who died from influenza while he was a farmer and therefore was accustomed to the feel of losing a child in rural conditions but she cannot accept it.

Будь он менее самонадеян, он, конечно же, заглянул бы в энциклопедию и обнаружил, что это не что иное, как солевой осадок, оставшийся после высыхания древних морей.
